Course Formats
There are three course formats offered in the Graduate Theology Program.
-
The Traditional Classroom
where courses are offered on six Saturdays a semester or twelve Tuesdays or Thursdays a semester in a classroom
-
Hybrid Classes
meeting on site two times a semester with all other work done online
-
Online Classes
for which all work is done online
In order to provide as much interaction as possible between student and professor utilizing the online formats, instructors post lectures, discussions, videos, and other presentations to engage the class. Students also engage each other in dialogue. Access to the professor is a high priority in all of the formats.
Easy Listening OptionFor those who wish to experience theological learning without the normal academic commitment of completing assignments, there is an "Easy-Listening" option offered at a cost of only $50 per semester hour. Participants must have the appropriate background for graduate theology. Registration is on a space-available basis and must meet with the approval of the program director. Easy listening is appropriate for non-matriculated students as a first-time experience, for those fulfilling theology prerequisites, for professional development, and for personal enrichment.

Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality (SICS)
- Begins in June in Mobile and our Atlanta Extension
- Registration forms can be found under Registrations at the bottom of this page
- Textbook Lists and Course Schedule - can be found under Documents on the right side of this webpage
The Summer Institute of Christian Spirituality
is a non-degree program offered only during the summer, for graduate or undergraduate credit, with space-available options for informal auditing (Easy Listening), at a reduced tuition. The program combines academic course work in different areas of spirituality; liturgies and special activities aimed at building a community of spiritual growth and sharing among participants.
-
The Mobile Institute is offered in two one-week sessions in June; June 1-7 and June 9-14 on the
Spring Hill College
campus.
-
The Atlanta Institute is an abbreviated form of the Mobile format, offering three sessions:
Two sessions in intensive weekend formats June 14-16 and June 21-23; One week-long session in the evenings June 17-20 at
Ignatius Retreat House
in Atlanta.
-
An 8 or 5 day Ignatian Silent Directed Retreat begins June 15 through June 22, 2013 on the Spring Hill College campus. The 8 day retreat begins with a short orientation on Friday night, June 14 with the first full retreat day beginning on Saturday, June 15 - Saturday, June 22, 2013 (you may leave at the end of the retreat that evening or stay until Sunday morning, June 23) The 5 day retreat can consist of any five consecutive days between June 15 and June 22 (please arrive the day before to attend a short orientation the night before) For additional details on the retreat please click on the link below.
Course offerings are one credit hour each with one course offering second and third credit hours online after the first course is completed. Students taking courses for graduate credit (500 level) must have official transcripts of the undergraduate degree sent to the Office of Graduate and Continuing Studies. Undergraduate credit (400 level) requires documentation of high school diploma or previous college work. For transient credit (to be applied to another institution), the appropriate forms must be supplied from the other institution.
Spirituality courses are designated as SPT and do not satisfy undergraduate theology core requirements. With approval of the director of graduate theology, up to 50 percent of the corresponding “category requirements” (biblical, historical, moral, systematic and pastoral) for the CTS, BA or MTS/MPS/MA programs may be fulfilled by SPT courses. These courses may also be taken in pursuit of the Certificate of Spiritual Direction (see program description for more info on CSD).

WHAT IS MY USERNAME AND PASSWORD?
(.PDF, 20K)
- Your username and password are your keys to navigating Badger Web, getting your email, registering for classes, viewing your financial information, and taking courses online through eCompanion. The handout above will help you see where to login, and learn how to get your username and password based on your date of entry into the graduate theology program. (Should you have problems, please contact the Help Desk - 251-380-2276 or helpdesk@shc.edu)
-
NOTE: Should you run into an error - such as registering for the wrong class, or needing to register after online registration has closed - You will need to submit an email using your SHC email account to make your request. It is important to identify yourself - and this process will assist in that endeavor.
-
ALSO NOTE: You must register for every class, either online or by paper registration. Being enrolled in eCompanion does not mean that you are registered. eCompanion lists all participants, both students for credit and easy listening students, but the official class list denotes if you are actually a student in the course. To have a course listed on your academic record, to receive a grade for your work, and to receive a statement from the billing office, you must be listed on the official class list.
